Don the Verb: Spring 2010 Clothing Preview

donverb

We were super excited to view the Don the Verb’s spring clothing line debut this past Monday night.   When we attended the debut we were initially unsure of what to expect since I had never heard anything about the line. What greeted me when I arrived made me pleased.  Inside a building in SoHo was a stark, Zen like space, populated by space age silver mannequins.  The clean aesthetic of the space continued to the bar, where only Svedva Vodka was served as drink.  The clothes were a beautiful continuation of the surroundings.   Stark as well, with a strict color palette of mostly black and grey punctuated with the occasional sighting of orange red, loden green, a fleshy pink, they lent for interesting viewing.  Interesting details were abound, like in a draped military-style jacket, which was accented with ruched sort of belt-closure.  Other favorites were a pale pink layered slip dress, and orange-red jodhpurs paired with a tweed jacket. The clothes certainly weren’t for the faint of heart. Overall, we felt as if the designers captured the most important sensibilities for the season and reinterpreted them in a way that was unique to their vision.  The mannequin displays were also a great way to see the details of the clothes.  Oh, and one of the designers had a confession for us:  she’s a fan of dolce vita!  Brava!

Karin Dreijer Andersson of Fever Ray’s Free Halloween Mix

feverray01

Leave it to Karin Dreijer Andersson of the music groups Fever Ray and The Knife to put out a Halloween mix. Their haunting brand of electronic music has the ability to get you dancing and frightened all in the same 5 minute song. Read the interview with her from RA Podcast and download it here.

We were also lucky enough to see her perform here in New York on her tour to support her self-titled album Fever Ray last month which was one of the best shows we have seen in years. With the lazer show burning into our souls while smoke blanketed the room and the performers dressed in outlandish costumes, we felt like we were joining a cult as much as attending a concert. Seeing the faces of everyone leaving the show, we could tell that everyone felt as drained from the sensory overload as we were. If you ever have the chance, I would highly suggest going to a show that will surely stay with you.

Dolce Vita in Sex and the City Sequel

***SPOILER ALERT***

For those of you craving more Sex and the City, we have good news for you! The second installment of the movie is scheduled to release May 2010, and some gossip hounds here at the Melrose store have managed to uncover some juicy details.

Along with great scenes involving Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte in head to toe 80’s getups, the sequel will feature a scene with Kim Cattral’s character (Samantha) and Miley Cyrus running into each other on the red carpet, embarassingly wearing the same outfit.

As shown above, the two wear matching sparkly mini-dresses and the Marilyn boot by Dolce Vita in Desert. The characters may be commiting major fashion faus pax, but for how amazing these boots are, we don’t blame them.

Radio City Music Hall presents Regina Spektor

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

reginaspektor2

Regina Spektor was back in New York today, performing at the one and only Radio City Music Hall. She is currently promoting her new cd Far, which features some of our personal favorites such as “Blue Lips” and “Dance Anthem of the 80’s”. Always a spectacular performance, Regina Spektor wowed us with her unique voice and quirky lyrics. It’s great to hear personal poetry from an artist that we would call mainstream, which is a change from the lip-syncing that surround us today (we won’t mention names….Britney Spears). She showed a bit of her serious side during the song “Laughing with” which deals with faith.

Overall a fun show, worth every penny! If you don’t have her new album, we recommend you hop on your computer and download some of her tunes. Her lyrics are fun and playful and her personality shined through during this memorable performance here in New York City. We are sad to see her go, but if you are lucky enough to be in the next city she is traveling to, pick up a ticket!
