(Capsule) Trends For Spring

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Picture 17

Earlier this month, the folks over at (Capsule) held their international trade show of  up- and- coming- designers right in our Lower East Side neighborhood. Besides showcasing what’s of the moment in unisex shoes and apparel, the event also brings together some of the most interesting players in independent art and publishing. While over the summer they set up a temporary gallery and zine making station in conjunction with Modular Records and Dossier Magazine, this time around they turned the show into a neighborhood party by re-teaming up with superfuture to offer deals and drinks to all those in attendance. Two days, two locations, and one after party later it’s become clear- this spring we can look forward to a minimalist, pared-down look featuring simplicity and bold shapes. However, we at Dolce Vita already knew the beauty of less-is-more and our spring arrivals (which come in monochromes of black, white, pink, brown, and silver ) are made for everything from lounging at a neighborhood get together, to event-hopping in the streets of NYC.

cochella

We are sure you have heard  about the amazing Coachella lineup already, but in case you haven’t… this year’s annual pilgrimage to the desert will include headliners Jay Z, Muse, and the Gorillaz, as well as feature indie and hip-hop heavy hitters such as MGMT, Spoon, Vampire Weekend, De La Soul, Sly and the Family Stone, and Flying Lotus. We are so excited about the stacked lineup that we’ve been debating  if this may be the best Coachella ever! Other exciting artists include Fever Ray, Major Lazer, and Julian Casablancas.

Those of you bold enough to brave the crowds of half naked 20 somethings and 100+ degree weather will surely be in for a treat!

Noah Davis “The Forgotten Works”

noah1

We love Noah Davis’ new show “The Forgotten Works”, which opened at Roberts and Tilton last week.

Davis has created new large scale paintings with a similar palette of the late Richard Diebenkorn, combined with contemporary imagery and an unsettling narrative quality. His show is up until February 20th in Culver City. If you’re in town be sure to check it out!

Nosaj Thing

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

nosaj thing

Experience our latest obsession: Nosaj Thing. ‘Nosaj Thing’ is 24 year old California native Eric Chung, whose innovative blend of sonic, bass-heavy beats and funky everyday noises (think peeling of masking tape and jingling change) has put him in the ranks of Flying Lotus, Daddy Kev, Jeremy Ellis and other underground hip-hop locals. His premiere album, ‘Drift’ earned a 7.9 rating on Pitchfork and has piqued the interests of devout FlyLo fans. Nosaj Thing is currently touring till late February up and down the west coast (he hits Seattle 2/10!) and is playing for Daedelus – the two of them are certain to make for a great show!

Turquoise Named Color Of The Year By Pantone

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

turqouisefashion2

With spring right around the corner, we (especially here in NYC) could use a little more color in our lives. That’s why the geniuses over at Pantone – the leading authority on color standards and trends for the design industry, have named easy-going and breezy Turquoise as the official color for 2010. While they expect Turquoise to turn up everywhere from runways to your favorite new baubles,  just how do they decide what the “color of the year” will be?

The Color Institut at Pantone thoroughly searches the globe, studying colors in a variety of contexts from the streets to trade shows,  making sure to note what effect the hue will have on your mood. As for their choice of Turquoise,  according to Pantone “Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters …escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of well being.”

We here at DV have already embraced the healing powers of Turquoise and have stocked stores with new dresses in this cheery shade by Dolce Vita, Mara Hoffman, as well as Cynthia Vincent tunics. Be sure to check back online and in- shop as we unveil the rest of our spring collection!

Until then, keep thinking of those blue skies and lazy summer days right over the horizon…

BY AND BY, OH LORD, BY AND BY

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

byandby

There’s an exciting new art space in Williamsburg you should definitely check out. BY AND BY is a small, independent bookseller that carries carefully selected art books, cultural magazines, and zines. Think of the merchandise as curated–all staff picks. But the cozy space is more than just a bookstore. There’s also a gallery space that features emerging artists that we’re excited to get behind. Their first opening was a huge success, and they’re looking forward to hosting monthly shows. Drop by. They’re in a great location, just off the Lorimer stop on the L train (552 Grand between Union and Lorimor, Bklyn), surrounded by coffee shops, great bars, and right next door to new a vintage clothing boutique. Check out Hector Serna Jr.’s Black and White Drawings on Friday, January 8, 2010 6-9pm.
