Following the recent passing of esteemed actor Dennis Hopper, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) held an event this past Saturday to celebrate his life and creations. Well known for his prolific film work, it’s often overlooked that the actor also dabbled in various art mediums and the exploration of pop culture. The exhibit (in conjunction with the event ) traces the evolution of Hopper’s artistic output, featuring more than 200 works spanning his 60-year career. As for the night itself, it was a fitting and beautiful way to commemorate the memory of such a multifaceted artist.
The exhibition will be on view from July 11- September 16, 2010

Though it won’t be coming to runways anytime soon, scientists have formed a new metamaterial which “absorbs virtually all the light that hits it” (to put in comparison, ordinary black objects always reflect at least a little light). How does it work? These metamaterials consist of tiny components, each smaller than the wavelengths of the light they interact with- causing the black to absorb all color and activity around it- then viola!- the ultimate black. While this “new black” will most likely be used for military purposes, don’t think that NYC fashion designers aren’t already eye-ing this revolutionary hue.

Admit it, you love the darker things in life. With sunshine all around, and summer on everyone’s mind, where can you go to embrace your inner goth? We introduce to you: Cemetery Screenings at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Following the usual summertime tradition, the cemetery will be hosting showings of fun films ranging from the scary, to the spooky, to the downright ridiculous (have you ever watched Beetlejuice in the park with one hundred or so of your best friends?). The event permits alcohol and encourages picnic baskets, so for those of you looking for a fun activity on a Saturday night – cozy up to a loved one, or brave the night with a few close gal pals and come on down for some good, old-fashioned scares!
Gates open at 7:30, and the movie plays at 9:00. Make sure to arrive early for better seating! Click here for movie listings.

The ABC Show ‘Castle‘ filmed a scene at the Melrose Store this past week. Our store underwent an extreme transformation. The show’s set dresser replaced all our furniture and added an entire wall facade installment! It was neat to see the store dress up for a special television appearance. The scene took place in New York, so we got to pretend we were bicoastal for a bit. Check out the photos!

ABC’s Castle airs weekly, Monday nights 9/10c. Keep a lookout for the Melrose Store in upcoming episodes!

After a long hiatus, Bastide – the restaurant next door – has reopened. Remodeled with the addition of an adorable bookstore boutique called “Assouline Publishing,” the formerly luxe eatery has reintroduced itself with a bit of accessibility. Plates range from $10 – $30 and the restaurant has taken on more of a cafe feel, but the food is still just as delicious. Check out LA Weekly for more info on Bastide’s reopening.

We’re really pleased to have Hart Boyd as our featured artist for the months of December and January. He describes his most recent work as being, “centered on the development of a photographic process which directly records the movement and application of light.”
If you’re in the area, please stop by for our opening on December 12th from 6-9. Partake in a little shopping, a glass of wine, and have a look at Hart’s beautiful, camera-less, photographs.
