Following the recent passing of esteemed actor Dennis Hopper, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) held an event this past Saturday to celebrate his life and creations. Well known for his prolific film work, it’s often overlooked that the actor also dabbled in various art mediums and the exploration of pop culture. The exhibit (in conjunction with the event ) traces the evolution of Hopper’s artistic output, featuring more than 200 works spanning his 60-year career. As for the night itself, it was a fitting and beautiful way to commemorate the memory of such a multifaceted artist.
The exhibition will be on view from July 11- September 16, 2010

While the heat and humidity leave much to be desired, one thing we’re grateful for this summer (and every summer) is the plethora of ice cream trucks lining this city. Whether you’re a die-hard Mister Softee fan, or you need something with a little more variety- NYC has got something for you. Last September at the Fashion’s Night Out celebration, we discovered Heartschallenger- who serve up more of an experience than just soft serve. Below you can see some of the pictures we snapped outside Opening Ceremony boutique:

Another of our frozen favorites are Van Leeuwen Artisanal Ice Cream, whose vans have popped-up everywhere from local concerts to outside The Standard Hotel downtown. While they now have a store in Greenpoint, Brooklyn we still look forward to spotting that yellow truck from a distance.

While it’s small and often overlooked il laboratorio del gelato is close to our headquarters (and our hearts), and on a balmy day nothing is better than a scoop of their green tea or lavender gelato.

With Lindsay Lohan’s recent nail polish controversy dominating the headlines, we couldn’t help but look for other manicure- related inspiration. The nice thing about making a fashion statement via your fingertips ? It’s relatively impermanent and a great way to inject color and flash into your wardrobe. If you happen to live in Brooklyn, Hello Beautiful Salon in Williamsburg (218 Bedford Ave.) is home to the wonderfully talented Naomi Yasuda, who has done creations for everyone from Alicia Keys and Fantasia to Amanda Lepore and Lady Gaga. You can check out some of her masterpieces below:

She may used to have been scary, but former Spice Girl Mel B looks nothing but sweet to us taking a stroll out in her Estelles. We’re guessing 4 inch heels just don’t cut it in the summer heat like a nice pair of flats-

No one does bi-coastal better than Carlo McCormick, the original mastermind behind Paper Magazine. That’s why whether you’re Pro- LA or Pro- NYC there’ll be something for everyone at the opening of Shred this Thursday at Perry Rubenstein Gallery, curated by Mr. McCormick himself. Featuring the work of urban and fine artists Bruce Conner, Erik Foss, FAILE, Jess, Shepard Fairey, and Swoon, the opening of “Shred” should not be missed, if nothing for the sheer star wattage sure to be in attendance.

While no one is disputing that NYC has its fair share of beautiful parks, none has the same Joie de Vive as Midtown’s Bryant Park. Home to the tents of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, as well as being the Ivy covered backyard to The New York Public Library’s grandest building – Bryant Park is a long time favorite of tourists and New Yorkers alike. If you happen to live nearby, tomorrow the park will be having a free screening of the 1956 film adaptation of Rogers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. This sing-a-long hit centers around a carousel barker (Gordon MacRae ) who falls in love with an enchanting young mill worker played by Shirley Jones. However, after getting her pregnant he dies in a botched robbery, and 15 years later is allowed to come back from heaven to make amends. The film starts at 5 so be sure to come early and with a picnic basket!

In this month’s People Magazine 50 Most Amazing Bodies issue, we happened to catch a glimpse of The Hills‘ Whitney Port wearing the Josie romper. We think the dusty color goes great with her tan- Whitney’s a California girl through and through! You never know who you’ll run into in this city. In this case, former MTV VJ and current New Yorker Alexa Chung was recently seen out wearing the Nolita in black. We love how Alexa paired the simple flats with a girlie floral dress and leopard bag for a look that’s ultra-feminine, but still retains that trademark Alexa edge. Check out the shopping section of our site to the see rest of our flats collection, great for an easy (and walkable) summer!

Though it won’t be coming to runways anytime soon, scientists have formed a new metamaterial which “absorbs virtually all the light that hits it” (to put in comparison, ordinary black objects always reflect at least a little light). How does it work? These metamaterials consist of tiny components, each smaller than the wavelengths of the light they interact with- causing the black to absorb all color and activity around it- then viola!- the ultimate black. While this “new black” will most likely be used for military purposes, don’t think that NYC fashion designers aren’t already eye-ing this revolutionary hue.
