The Colorful Art Of Julia Chiang

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

You could say Brooklyn based artist Julia Chiang is a master of melding mediums. Using a wide variety of materials for her unique sculpture and installation based work, Chiang manages to capture a concise feeling or emotion often with minimal (and frequently edible) visuals. However, what Chiang is most well known for is her nostalgic ode to a childhood favorite- the ring pop. In fact, this dime store staple has been used by Chiang in a number of works, ranging from a piece at the recent Miami Art Basel to an installation at NYC’s The Standard Hotel. In these pieces, the candy jewels atop the rings melt over time under gallery lights and slowly drip down the walls. The melted sugar then stains the surfaces it touches, creating beautiful drip imagery.

Check out some of her work below:

The Seattle store is pleased to present the work of local artist, Irene Wood, who describes her paintings as “a layering of abstract form, color, and modified nature motifs in order to create visions of dream-like ecological utopias that exist in the liminal space between reality and fiction”. Come take a peak on April 10, from 6-9 pm.

(Capsule) Trends For Spring

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Picture 17

Earlier this month, the folks over at (Capsule) held their international trade show of  up- and- coming- designers right in our Lower East Side neighborhood. Besides showcasing what’s of the moment in unisex shoes and apparel, the event also brings together some of the most interesting players in independent art and publishing. While over the summer they set up a temporary gallery and zine making station in conjunction with Modular Records and Dossier Magazine, this time around they turned the show into a neighborhood party by re-teaming up with superfuture to offer deals and drinks to all those in attendance. Two days, two locations, and one after party later it’s become clear- this spring we can look forward to a minimalist, pared-down look featuring simplicity and bold shapes. However, we at Dolce Vita already knew the beauty of less-is-more and our spring arrivals (which come in monochromes of black, white, pink, brown, and silver ) are made for everything from lounging at a neighborhood get together, to event-hopping in the streets of NYC.

Noah Davis “The Forgotten Works”

noah1

We love Noah Davis’ new show “The Forgotten Works”, which opened at Roberts and Tilton last week.

Davis has created new large scale paintings with a similar palette of the late Richard Diebenkorn, combined with contemporary imagery and an unsettling narrative quality. His show is up until February 20th in Culver City. If you’re in town be sure to check it out!

Nosaj Thing

nosaj thing

Experience our latest obsession: Nosaj Thing. ‘Nosaj Thing’ is 24 year old California native Eric Chung, whose innovative blend of sonic, bass-heavy beats and funky everyday noises (think peeling of masking tape and jingling change) has put him in the ranks of Flying Lotus, Daddy Kev, Jeremy Ellis and other underground hip-hop locals. His premiere album, ‘Drift’ earned a 7.9 rating on Pitchfork and has piqued the interests of devout FlyLo fans. Nosaj Thing is currently touring till late February up and down the west coast (he hits Seattle 2/10!) and is playing for Daedelus – the two of them are certain to make for a great show!
